Experienced Manitoba Circumcision Doctor – Dr. Jay
Dr. Jay Buenafe is a well-known and respected physician in Manitoba with over a dozen years of practice in Family Medicine. He performs circumcision procedures at our circumcision clinic as his primary medical practice.
Dr. Jay has chosen to focus his clinic to only two surgical procedures and Pollock Technique™ circumcision is one of these procedures. After extensive research on circumcision methods in use today in Canada and around the world, Dr. Jay chose to have extensive training with Dr. Neil Pollock, one of North America’s foremost authorities on baby and child circumcision.
Dr. Pollock’s research into developing a safe, quick and virtually pain free approach to circumcision has been widely recognized in North America. Dr. Jay is proud to bring Dr. Pollock’s techniques to Manitoba, and his clinic has grown enormously as a result. Parents are relieved to have a virtually pain-free option for the circumcision of their baby boys – and older boys and adult men are benefit equally from Pollock Technique™ circumcision.
Buenafe Clinic specializes in a virtually painless circumcision operation for baby boys, older boys, teens and adult men. Our clients come from across Manitoba (and some from Ontario) because our circumcision procedure and Dr. Buenafe’s expertise is considered the optimal experience for circumcision at any age.
Our team of dedicated medical professionals understands the concerns of parents for their babies, as well as the situation of newborns being integrated into family life. We do our best to provide a private and personalized experience for our clients.
Adult men are also an important client group at our circumcision clinics – because there are few facilities with the level of focus, expertise, and experience that our centre brings to adult circumcision. Our in-office procedure under local anaesthetic is the most convenient procedure available, and offers excellent cosmetic results.
Our doctor and staff are happy to assist you with any questions or concerns that you may have, and are available by phone, or by booking a consultation. The clinic generally has appointments available within a few days and you can request an appointment now if desired.

Infant Circumcision at Our Centre
We believe that there is nothing better for ensuring a baby’s comfort than the presence of a parent. Your baby is always with you, and you are welcome and encouraged to be in the private room during the procedure.
Parents are never asked to wait in another room while the circumcision is being done. Soft music is played creating a calm, relaxing environment for your baby.
Babies, if they remain awake during the procedure, are soothed by a pacifier made up of natural ingredients. Research shows that pleasant flavours can further reduce pain perception. At Buenafe Clinic, it is not uncommon for babies to sleep right through their circumcision.
We recognize that warmth is part of a comfortable environment for your baby. The procedure room will be kept warm and is equipped with a local thermostat so that each family can create the right temperature for their baby.
Adult circumcision is undertaken by our clients for a variety of reasons. Some men get themselves circumcised at an adult age for personal or cosmetic reasons.
Other seek relief from an overly tight foreskin (including phimosis) or other conditions that can be ameliorated via an adult circumcision procedure.
Whatever the reason a mature man seeks to get circumcised (at any age), we are pleased to offer the safe and gentle adult circumcision care in Manitoba.
Our circumcision doctor performs adult circumcision regularly and our proven Pollock Technique™ is know to deliver the desired cosmetic results with the minimum of discomfort.
No Hospital Visit for Circumcision
Importantly – a general anaesthetic is not required – and this significantly reduces the risk and complexity of the procedure.
With the use of multiple local anesthetic only we eliminate the need for a hospital setting and are able to perform the circumcision procedure for adult age males in our Winnipeg circumcision clinic on an in-office-procedure basis.
Our Pollock Technique™ circumcision reduces cost and complexity and permits us to safely and efficiently perform adult circumcision procedures for Manitoba men.
Getting Circumcised as an Adult
If you are considering getting yourself circumcised, please contact us for a consultation. We recommend a consultation appointment with Dr. Jay prior to your final decision on whether you want to get circumcised so that you can get answers to your specific questions.
As with any surgery, there are some risks, so it is necessary that you do your research and make a fully informed decision. We will be pleased to respond to your questions about the procedure and to confirm on appointment availability.
Each year, there are over a million circumcisions performed in North America. Newborn circumcision, when performed properly, is quick and safe. The medical benefits accrue from infancy through old age.
It is Dr. Jay’s position (as well as the position of the Canadian Pediatric society) that; “When parents are making a decision about circumcision they should be advised of the present state of medical knowledge about its benefits and harms. Their decision may ultimately be based on personal, religious or cultural factors”.
In 2012, The American Academy of Pediatrics published in a Policy Statement that; “current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks”.
For more information on the risks and benefits of circumcision, please visit our Media page to find links to original policy statements and studies – including a 2016 paper published in the Canadian Journal of Urology which concludes that the benefits of circumcision may have been previously understated. The authors (including Dr. Neil Pollock) find that circumcision affords important benefits to men.
Why do so many doctors recommend Buenafe Clinic for circumcision?
Manitoba family doctors refer patients to our clinic for circumcision because that is our expertise.
Dr. Jay uses the Pollock Technique™, a quick and virtually painless procedure pioneered by Dr. Neil Pollock and safely performed on over 50,000 infants.
For a video demonstration of Dr. Pollock’s circumcision technique, click here.
Our procedure takes only a minute (10 times quicker than most hospital circumcisions). We use extensive pain control methods including Tylenol, a sugar solution (to reduce pain perception), a topical freezing cream, and a local anesthetic injection (both short- and long-acting). There are extremely low complication rates.
For your peace of mind, Dr. Jay is available 24 hours a day on his personal cell phone. All families are given his contact information if any concerns should arise so they can reach the doctor directly at any hour.
We do not charge any hospital administration fees at our private clinic.
Why do Manitoba parents choose to circumcise their sons?
An infant circumcision is often undertaken for cultural and religious reasons, and there can be health benefits as well. Our Muslim clients circumcise their babies in accordance with their traditions, and many other families simply choose to carry on a family or cultural tradition, or seek the health benefits that may come from male circumcision:
It reduces the risk of urinary tract infection.
It reduces the risk of penile infection also called balanoposthitis.
It eliminates the need for circumcision later in life when up to 6% of boys will require a circumcision because of various problems.
It reduces the risk of getting some sexually transmitted diseases including Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and AIDS (HIV).
It reduces the risk of penile cancer and cervical cancer in partners.
Circumcised men have less risk of sexual dysfunction later in life.
Why do some Manitoba parents choose not to circumcise their sons?
They do not want to cause pain or complications to an otherwise healthy baby.
They are concerned that their child may wish later on that he had not been circumcised.
Some parents can be less interested in following cultural and religious traditions.
They are unaware of the medical reasons in favour of a circumcision.
Circumcision Clinic FAQ – What is circumcision?
Circumcision is a simple operation that involves removal of the foreskin that sheaths the head of the penis. There are a number of very different methods used today for circumcision and the application of anesthesia.
The Pollock Technique™ for infant circumcision allows for a virtually painless and bloodless procedure to be safely performed in one minute. This technique was developed by Dr. Pollock and is used by Dr. Jay at Buenafe Clinic. The Pollock Technique™ is not used by all circumcision doctors in Winnipeg despite its’ benefits because it is relatively new and requires training with Dr. Pollock at his clinics in Vancouver.
Key Questions About Infant Male Circumcision
Parents sometimes ask about why circumcision should be done, and what type of circumcision is best. On these questions we can answer that the decision on why to circumcise is a personal one that will be made within your family based on your traditions and values.
There are some potential health benefits to male infant circumcision and there are also some reasons not to circumcise baby boys.
Our recommendation is that you make an informed a decision as possible, and the answer to the question of why to circumcise that you come to will be unique to you and your family.
Circumcision is part of both Judaism and Islam, and many Christians and people of other religious backgrounds also choose circumcision for health and cosmetic reasons, or to continue family tradition. At Buenafe Clinic we perform circumcision for families and for men that have chosen the procedure for a wide variety of cultural, personal, health, and medical reasons.
Many Canadian men are circumcised, as infant circumcision was routinely done on a majority of male babies in the 1970’s for health reasons. Data from www.circinfo.net.

Types of Circumcision
There are different circumcision techniques practiced by different doctors but the main “circumcision types” are simply circumcised and uncircumcised. We are occasionally asked about a “tight circumcision” or a “low circumcision”, but our method is designed to give the same result in all cases and we do not offer a choice of different circumcision types – and we apply our standard procedure in all cases except where a patient may present with a unique situation requiring a unique approach.
While all circumcision methods generally seek a similar result – some are better than others at achieving a consistent outcome with minimal pain and risk of complications. At the Buenafe circumcision clinic in Winnipeg we only use the Pollock Technique™ because we believe it is the safest and most comfortable method for male circumcision available today.
The method we use minimizes pain for the patient via application of multiple modalities to reduce it, including:
Tylenol before the procedure
Numbing cream applied before the anaesthetic injection
A dorsal penile block (a freezing injection) that removes all feeling from the penis
A sugar pacifier to keep the baby distracted (not used in adult circumcisions)
Post-circumcision follow-up to quickly spot any issues.
Additionally, our doctor also controls environmental factors in the procedure room to maximize the patient’s comfort. We maintain the temperature at a warm and comfortable level and may play music to help provide a calm ambiance during the brief operation.
Why a Winnipeg Circumcision Doctor
It is possible to get baby boys circumcised in a non-medical setting for religious reasons. We strongly recommend that even in this case the circumcision be performed only by trained, experienced, and licensed medical doctors. Many ritual circumcision practitioners meet this criteria, and some may not.
If you are considering a circumcision done by someone who may not be a licensed doctor, we recommend a careful evaluation of their credentials.
